Tierra Alta Ecolodge
San Ramón, Matagalpa

Mountain cabins in northern Nicaragua.

We're Daniel and Tila. We spent about ten years building these three cabins by hand on a hillside above San Ramón, and we're still not finished.

How this place happened

We came from Canada more than ten years ago on a trip that was only supposed to last two weeks. Something about these mountains got in the way of the return flight. We stayed, found this hillside above San Ramón, and started clearing it ourselves.

Daniel cut and framed most of the cabins by hand. The railing on the first one is woven from monkey vine that grows wild along the trail to the river, he's replaced it twice since, vine doesn't last forever outdoors. Tila runs the kitchen, and what she cooks depends on what's actually ripe that week rather than a menu that stays the same in July as it does in January.

San Ramón is a small town and we live in it, we're not just visiting. Neighbors bring us produce we don't grow ourselves, and every so often we spend an afternoon planting trees on the parts of the hillside that were cleared long before we got here. If you're staying more than a night or two and want to help, ask, we're always glad for the extra hands.

Dirt trail through dry forest

Howler monkeys live along the river. Sloths mostly stay in the trees near the rancho trail.

There's an owl in the garden most nights, and more birds than we've ever managed to count. Nothing here is staged for photos. Everything on this page was taken on the property.

Cactus Club

We're partnering with local artisans and artists to build Cactus Club: a full service bar and restaurant going up on the hillside, the same way everything else here got built, by hand.

It isn't open yet, but when it is, expect local wood, local art, and a kitchen tied to the same garden as the rest of Tierra Alta.
